Congratulations to President-elect Donald J. Trump and all those who supported him in his historic victory. It wasn’t the outcome that I and nearly half of America’s voters wanted. But it’s time to be positive about his win and work for the future of the country.
Trump proclaimed his victory as a “unprecedented and powerful mandate” and called upon the nation to unite. With control of the Senate, and most probably the House, he is indeed empowered to accomplish his agenda. Rather than condemn and resist his leadership, it’s time for us who voted for Kamala Harris to look for ways to support the President elect. Personally, I believe there are many of his commitments and promises we can get behind, especially if they are aimed at uniting the country.
Going forward in this quest for unity, I suggest there are two principles all Americans con agree on. First, rather than fight over differences, we need identify and make progress on areas of agreement. Working with Trump’s agenda, I’ll describe those areas of agreement in a moment. Second, we should proceed based on the truth and the facts. Neither side should be lying to the American people nor to one another. Going forward, it’s okay–even necessary–to engage a vigorous debate to make sure we agree on the facts and the truth as much as possible.
Here are some of Trump’s key commitments and promises that we Harris voters, and indeed all Americans, can look forward to and support.
There are many areas where those of us who voted for Kamala Harris are greatly at odds with Trump and his supporters. On the other hand, I believe there are numerous areas where we agree, or at least have common interests. Since Trump won the presidency, it’s appropriate to work from his list of commitments and promises. Here are those that I believe us Harris voters and Americans can get behind.
- Americans look forward to Trump bringing down inflation from the current rate of 2.4%, and maintaining inflation levels at around 2% for the duration of his second term.
- Americans look forward to Trump lowering the price of groceries and gasoline to their cost levels during his first presidency. We look forward to gas at $2.57 per gallon. We also look forward to Trump surpassing the record crude oil production achieved during the Biden Administration.
- Americans look forward to Trump exceeding the nearly 16 million jobs created during the time Biden was in office.
- Americans look forward to Trump surpassing the nearly 50% increase in the stock market (48% S&P) that occurred during Biden’s term of office.
- Americans look forward to Trump lowering unemployment rates below 4.1% (the average during the Biden Administration) for the duration of his second term.
- Americans look forward to Trump producing economic growth significantly greater than the average annual 2.2% GDP growth achieved during Biden’s term.
- Americans look forward to Trump balancing the federal budget and drastically reducing the National Debt.
- Americans look forward to “no taxes on tips,” “no taxes on overtime,” and “no taxes on Social Security benefits.” We also look forward to further tax reductions, including the restoration of the state and local tax deduction. We share the view of Republicans and all Americans that these tax cuts must not come at the expense of ballooning federal deficits and the National Debt.
- Americans look forward to Trump expanding the Child Tax Credit to up to $5,000 per child.
- Americans look forward to Trump vetoing any Congressional action to establish a nationwide abortion ban.
- Americans look forward to Trump making housing and rents more affordable.
- Americans look forward to Trump lowering crime rates below those of the Biden Administration.
- Americans look forward to Trump lowering illegal border crossings to levels below those recently achieved and maintained by the Biden Administration. We also look forward to Trump eliminating the backlog of 3 million immigration court cases that allows these millions to stay in the country illegally until their cases are resolved.
- Americans look forward to Trump removing and deporting illegal immigrants, with two important conditions. First, Americans don’t support deportations on a scale that would destroy or seriously harm the economy. And, second, extreme care must be taken with respect to children of immigrants born in America. Because these children are American citizens, they should not be deported. And, if their parents are deported, what becomes of their children?
- Americans look forward to Trump ending Russia’s war with Ukraine “within 24 hours” (even before he becomes President), provided Russia’s invasion is not rewarded with Ukrainian territory or concessions. We also look forward to his bringing a lasting peace to conflict in the Middle East.
The commitments and promises listed above give us a measuring stick to assess whether Trump is delivering for America and Americans.
If Trump is able to deliver on all or most of the commitments and promises listed above, America and Americans will benefit. On the other hand, if the commitments and promises are not kept, America and Americans will suffer. Over time, we’ll be able to assess Trump’s track record. When did he succeed? When did he fail? And when did he not even try? Because we leaned into supporting the President elect for the good of the country, we should share our evaluation nationwide.
While we should support Trump’s call for unity and healing, we will continue to fight on issues where we have deep policy differences with Trump and Republicans.
As the election results broke in his favor, Trump called for unity. He also called for the country to heal. While there is reason to be dubious about these pronouncements given Trump’s past behavior, we should nonetheless heed his call. A commitment to unity and healing necessarily involves respectful dialogue, a search for common ground, and a willingness to compromise. If Trump is serious about this effort, we should embrace it. On the other hand, we’ll know soon enough if he actually meant what he said.
Giving unity a chance does not mean we abandon fighting for key concerns because we can’t find middle ground or resolve differences. Because Trump and the Republicans are in control of government, they have the responsibility to address problems, even if these problems aren’t on their agenda. Inevitably there will school shootings, women dying because they can’t get an abortion, natural disasters due to climate change, and other tragedies. We should continue to press hard on such issues and remind the American pubic that the party in control is accountable for fixing the problem.
