Most Americans aren’t feeling good about what’s going on in the country. A quick review of recent news stories tells us why. Here’s the quick and dirty.

“The U.S. national debt surpassed another historic milestone as it topped $38 trillion for the first time this week, as the federal government continues to rack up debt at a record-setting pace. . . The $38 trillion milestone comes a little over two months after the U.S. national debt reached $37 trillion for the first time in mid-August, and less than a year after the $36 trillion threshold was breached last December.”

Instead of paying down the skyrocketing national debt, President Trump wants to give some of the new tariff revenue to taxpayers. But since the costs of tariffs were already passed onto consumers in the form of higher prices (inflation), he’d just be giving back money that his tariff policies took from them.

Meanwhile, the price of groceries keeps going up. As you can see, during Biden’s final months, food inflation ranged from less than 1% to a little over 1.5% during. Since January, food inflation is ranging from 1.8% to 2.7%.

Americans aren’t buying Trump’s policies on tariffs, his handling of inflation and prices, or his handling of the economy. In fact, Trump’s job approval is at a record low (56% disapproval vs 39% approval) early in his term. And almost two-thirds of Americans (64%) disapprove of his handling of inflation and prices.

Time and again, President Trump doesn’t keep his word. He tells lies, and the American people increasingly view him as not honest and trustworthy. Only a third of Americans (33%) view Trump as honest and trustworthy.

Trump calls climate change a hoax. Meanwhile, extreme weather events keep increasing in number and cost. Trump’s solution? Stop updating the federal database that tracks these events, phase out FEMA, and shift the responsibility for climate disasters to state and local government.
